AWARD OF MERIT

WHIPPET NEWS salutes the winners of this award.

This award is not easy to come by. It involves many hours of training, conditioning, and travel. National Race Meets are few an far between in some areas and there is always the "unexpected" turn of fate when a dog just a little bit faster outruns one needing maybe just one or two points to win that elusive 15th point required to be called A.R.M.

This award is cherished by the owners of the winners pictured herein, is it an indication of their dogs ability and the Climax to his achievement.

Pictures and pedigrees of the winners may help in future planning of those interested in breeding a dual-purpose type Whippet, as it is noted that nearly all of the dogs

who have won this award have points towards their Championship and two are already Champions. This clearly indicates that show and racing can and do go together.

CONGRATULATIONS to these winners.

FIRST WHIPPET IN AMERICA to accumulate the necessary 15 points to secure an AWARD OF RACING MERIT" Certificate.

Strathoak Spring Intrigue is a solid race dog by any standard. He was an outstanding puppy racer who quickly moved into Grade A as an adult. His style of leaving the starting box slowly, depending on his late speed to bring him victory, caused him to lone many very close races. Spring Intrigue was the typo of "spoiler" that could and does continue to beat the very top racers when he breaks the box with his field.

Spring Intrigue is a fawn brindle standing a short 21 1/2 inches at the shoulder with his best racing weight being 34 pounds. He is a powerful but smoothly built Whippet. He was shown three times, winning the Puppy Class at both the Midwest and. Eastern American Whippet Club Specialties and was Winners Dog for four points in the show ring as an adult. His dislike of being handled in the ring and great love for racing ended his show ring career early.

Spring Intrigue is an excellent coursing dog on Kansas jack rabbits and runs the circular track equally as well as the straight track. He is accident prone having a dent in his skull the size of a quarter, a badly scarred right front leg, neck skin much like alligator hide, all from a gang kennel fight while in Kansas. He broke his toe schooling and his toe has been removed. In spite of age he continues to add honorary Award of Racing Merit Points in 1068-69, after winning the Award of Racing Merit Certificate in 167. If Friendly, his pet name at home, has his way in 1970, you will again find him racing in Grade A.

Ember's record is all the more remarkable when one considers she didn't run in an A.R.M. meet until she was 3 weeks short of her 3rd birthday and also that she missed both the 1967 and 1968 summer race season as she was bred OA both those occasions. Ember proved. that a good small whippet can be outstanding. Before the first litter, her racing weight was 23 pounds.

Shown only sparingly, Ember won her Canadian Championship in 4 straight shows, was twice Best Canadian Bred Hound and once Best Canadian Bred in Show.

Of the 3 adults surviving from her first litter, 2 are being shown and need.

but 1 point each for their show championship One of these, Emberson of Course, has won a Hound Group 1st, winner of the Award of Merit Certificate and eras ranked No. 1 racer in 1968. From her second litter, Cinders of Course has

won one puppy race meet and tied for top honors in another. Several of Cinder's littermates showed well in the recent Marysville, Ohio race meet.

Ember is now residing with her new co-owners, Victor and Margaret Renner. She is soon to be bred to Ch. Renfield Little Rogue.

1969 SPECIALTY WINNERS

The year 1969 saw records broken at two Specialty shows, one in Canada and one in the U.S. By the tire this issue reaches you, the last AWC Specialty of the year will be over. Plans for Specialties in 1970 are already under way in all areas of the U.S. and Canada. Indications are that more records will fall, so it looks like 1970 will be a most interesting and competitive year to watch.
